Microneedling is often described as a “collagen treatment”, but collagen does not appear overnight. The procedure creates controlled microscopic channels in the skin, which start a repair response. Redness may settle within days, while remodelling continues for weeks or months. This is why the best schedule is not simply “as often as possible”.
For many people, a short course followed by review is more useful than indefinite monthly appointments. The right interval depends on the concern, treatment depth, skin tone, healing, medical history and whether other procedures are being planned. A Dr Motox microneedling consultation should set the timing before the first session.

How does microneedling work?
A professional microneedling device uses fine, sterile needles to create controlled micro-injuries. The skin responds with inflammation, repair signals and gradual collagen remodelling. Think of it as sending a carefully measured repair message rather than removing the surface of the skin.
Microneedling may improve the appearance of acne scars, uneven texture, fine lines and some forms of pigmentation. It cannot erase every scar, permanently shrink pores or stop ageing. Results are gradual and vary. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that several sessions may be needed and that fuller results can take months.
How often should you have microneedling?
There is no single schedule for everyone. A typical course may involve three sessions around four to eight weeks apart, followed by a pause to assess progress. At Dr Motox, a gentler maintenance-focused microneedling facial is often considered every two to three months. More intensive scar protocols may use different intervals after medical assessment.
For acne scarring, the American Academy of Dermatology gives an example of three to five treatments performed every two to four weeks. That is not a universal prescription: needle depth, scar type, inflammation and recovery can all justify longer spacing. Treating skin that is still irritated increases risk without guaranteeing a better result.
General texture and radiance
A course of approximately three treatments, spaced four to eight weeks apart, may be discussed. Review photographs under consistent lighting before deciding on more.
Acne scarring
Scars often need a course rather than one session. Rolling and shallow boxcar scars may respond differently from deep ice-pick scars, which can require another approach. Active, painful or infected acne should settle before treatment.
Maintenance
After a successful course, maintenance may be occasional rather than monthly—often every three to twelve months depending on goals, skin and response. Some people need no fixed maintenance schedule.

What results should you expect?
Immediately afterwards, the skin may look red or temporarily darker, with tightness, warmth, swelling or mild pinpoint bleeding. Dryness and flaking can follow. Early brightness may partly reflect swelling and hydration; it is not the final collagen result.
A 2025 systematic review of facial rejuvenation studies found that most trials used multiple sessions and reported high patient satisfaction, but schedules and outcome measures varied. This supports microneedling as a useful option while also showing why exact promises and rigid universal treatment intervals are not evidence-based.
Microneedling with Exo-PDRN
Dr Motox also offers a microneedling facial incorporating Exo-PDRN as an adjunct. PDRN and exosome-inspired technologies are being studied for skin-repair signalling, but evidence for specific topical combinations remains emerging. The established part of the treatment is the controlled microneedling process; an add-on serum should not be presented as guaranteed to multiply results. Read our guide to exosomes and PDRN in skincare.
Between sessions, once the skin has fully settled, Medik8 Exo-PDRN Prismatic+ can be considered as part of a normal skincare routine. It is not equivalent to an injectable treatment and should not be applied to freshly needled skin unless specifically included in the clinician’s protocol.
Recovery skincare between sessions
Follow the personalised instructions you receive. For the early recovery period, use clean hands, a gentle cleanser and simple moisturising products. Avoid picking, scrubs, retinoids, exfoliating acids, fragranced products, swimming, saunas and intense exercise for the advised period. Wait at least 24 hours before make-up unless told otherwise, and use daily broad-spectrum SPF such as Medik8 Advanced Day Ultimate Protect SPF 50+.
The Dr Motox Exosome Collagen Face & Neck Sheet Mask is a staple hydration step for dry, oily and sensitive skin—not an optional extra. Use it regularly between treatments and once your clinician has cleared it after microneedling to support moisture and comfort. Patch test first and never apply it to infected, broken or actively inflamed skin. For a day-by-day plan, see our microneedling aftercare guide.
Who should postpone or avoid treatment?
Microneedling may be unsuitable with an active skin infection, cold sore, inflamed acne, recent tanning or sunburn, poor wound healing, a tendency to keloid scars, immune suppression, some bleeding disorders or medicines that affect clotting. Tell your practitioner about isotretinoin, allergies and previous pigment changes. Elective treatment is usually postponed during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Seek advice promptly for worsening pain, heat, spreading redness, pus, blistering, fever or an unexpected pigment change. Infection, scarring and prolonged discolouration are uncommon but recognised risks.
Microneedling frequency FAQs
Is microneedling every month too often?
Not always, but monthly treatment is not automatically necessary. The depth, indication and your recovery determine whether four weeks is appropriate or a longer interval is safer.
How many sessions will I need?
Many plans start with three sessions. Acne scarring may need three to five or a combined approach. Review after the course rather than committing indefinitely.
Can I microneedle at home between appointments?
We do not recommend trying to reproduce professional treatment at home. Overuse, poor technique or contaminated devices can cause irritation, infection, scarring and pigment change.
When should I have the final session before an event?
Leave at least four to six weeks, and longer if it is your first session or you have previously had prolonged redness or pigmentation.
Book a Dr Motox consultation to choose a treatment interval based on your skin rather than a generic calendar.
