ACNE SCARRING

Acne scarring occurs as a result of severe acne, particularly cystic acne, where inflammation damages the skin's tissues. When the body attempts to repair this damage, it can produce too much or too little collagen, leading to scars. Acne scars come in various forms:

Atrophic Scars: These are the most common type of acne scars and appear as depressions or indentations in the skin. They can be further categorised into ice pick scars (deep, narrow scars), boxcar scars (broad, rectangular depressions), and rolling scars (wave-like depressions).

Hypertrophic Scars: Unlike atrophic scars, hypertrophic scars are raised above the skin’s surface due to the excess production of collagen during the healing process.

Keloid Scars: A more severe form of hypertrophic scars, keloids extend beyond the original site of the acne lesion and can continue to grow over time. We advise seeing a dermatologist for this type of scarring.

Acne scarring can be just as distressing as the acne itself, as it can lead to long-lasting changes in skin texture and appearance. Fortunately, various treatment options are available to reduce the appearance of scars and improve skin texture. If this is a condition you are concerned about, book a consultation with our expert practitioners to discuss a personalised treatment plan tailored specifically for you.
