Microneedling Aftercare: What to Use and What to Avoid

Good microneedling aftercare is deliberately simple. The treatment creates many controlled microscopic channels in the skin, so the surface is temporarily more reactive. The priorities are clean hands, gentle products, hydration, sun protection and following the instructions given for your treatment depth.

What is normal after microneedling?

Redness, warmth, tightness, mild tenderness and light swelling can occur. Dryness or fine flaking may appear over the following days. The intensity varies with needle depth, treatment area, skin type and any products used during the procedure. A deeper scar-focused treatment may take longer to settle than a superficial facial.

Microneedling recovery timeline

A practical recovery guide; your clinician’s instructions take priority because treatment depth varies.
Period What you may notice Main priority
First 24 hours Redness, warmth, tightness or mild swelling Hands off, approved post-procedure products only, and avoid heat
Days 2–3 Redness often settles; dryness may appear Gentle cleansing, hydration and careful sun protection as advised
Days 4–7 Skin often feels more normal Continue gentle care; restart actives only when fully settled
Following weeks Gradual texture changes may develop Maintain SPF and review the planned treatment course

The first 24 hours: what to avoid

  • Do not touch, rub or pick the treated area.
  • Avoid make-up until your clinician confirms it is appropriate.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, swimming, saunas, steam rooms and very hot showers.
  • Do not use retinal, retinol, exfoliating acids, scrubs or fragranced products.
  • Do not apply ordinary serums simply because they are described as “soothing”.

Freshly needled skin is not the time to experiment. The US Food and Drug Administration’s microneedling safety guidance also highlights risks including infection, skin irritation, pigmentation changes and allergic reactions.

A gentle recovery routine

1. Cleanse carefully

Restart cleansing at the time advised by your clinician. Use clean hands, lukewarm water and a mild product such as Medik8 Gentle Cleanse. Pat dry with a clean towel; avoid cleansing brushes and abrasive cloths.

2. Support hydration and the barrier

The Medik8 Post-Treatment Kit is designed around simple recovery and barrier support. Use only what has been advised during the immediate post-procedure period.

The Dr Motox Exosome Collagen Face & Neck Sheet Mask is a staple hydration step for dry, oily and sensitive skin. It does not require practitioner recommendation for ordinary home use and can remain part of your regular routine, commonly once or twice weekly. Immediately after microneedling, however, wait until the puncture sites have settled and use it according to your procedure-specific aftercare. Patch test if sensitive to fragrance or botanicals, and never apply it to infected, significantly broken or actively inflamed skin.

3. Protect from ultraviolet light

Avoid direct sun while the skin is settling and use broad-spectrum sunscreen once advised. Medik8 Advanced Day Ultimate Protect SPF 50+ is one high-protection option. A hat, shade and sensible reapplication matter too.

What to use and what to avoid

Choose gentle recovery care and delay heat, swimming, scrubs and strong active ingredients.

Retinoids and exfoliating acids

Retinal, retinol, prescription retinoids, glycolic acid and salicylic acid can irritate a temporarily vulnerable barrier. Restart only after redness, sensitivity and flaking have resolved and according to the advice for your treatment depth. Resume gradually rather than returning immediately to your highest frequency.

Exercise, heat and swimming

Heat and increased blood flow can worsen redness and swelling, while sweat may sting. Pools, hot tubs and open water also introduce microorganisms or chemicals. Follow the clinic’s timeframe rather than relying on a universal rule.

Make-up and exfoliation

Applying make-up too early can irritate the surface and introduce contamination. Allow flaking to shed naturally; picking, scrubs and brushes can add inflammation and increase the chance of marks.

What about exosomes and PDRN?

Exosome and PDRN technologies are increasingly paired with professional microneedling. The evidence and regulation vary by product and intended use, so benefits should not be treated as guaranteed. Only sterile, professionally selected products intended for the procedure should be used during or immediately after needling. An everyday cosmetic serum should not be assumed safe for temporary channels in the skin.

When should you contact the clinic?

Contact your treating clinic promptly for worsening pain, increasing heat, spreading redness, pus, blistering, marked swelling, fever, eye symptoms or anything rapidly worsening. Early assessment is safer than adding more products. Microneedling should be postponed when there is active infection, open skin or a significant inflammatory flare; some medical conditions, medicines, cold-sore history and impaired healing also require assessment.

Planning treatments around microneedling

At Dr Motox microneedling appointments, suitability, depth and aftercare are personalised. Sessions should be spaced according to the concern and recovery rather than repeated as soon as redness disappears; collagen remodelling continues after the surface looks normal.

Microneedling may sometimes be combined with injectable polynucleotides on the same day, with needling performed first, when clinically appropriate. If Botox is planned afterwards, Dr Motox generally advises waiting at least one week. Botox may instead be performed before microneedling or, in selected plans, earlier on the same day. Your clinician should coordinate the sequence.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wash my face after microneedling?

Follow your clinician’s timing. When cleansing restarts, use clean hands, lukewarm water and a mild cleanser without scrubbing.

When can I wear make-up?

Wait until the treated surface has recovered sufficiently and your practitioner agrees. Do not cover unexpected inflammation with make-up.

Is flaking normal?

Light dryness or flaking can occur. Heavy peeling, blistering, increasing pain or discharge requires advice.

Can I use the Dr Motox sheet mask regularly?

Yes. It is a regular hydration staple for dry, oily and sensitive skin. Around microneedling, follow the specific timing in your aftercare rather than applying any cosmetic product to freshly treated skin.
