Retinal is one of the most effective cosmetic vitamin A ingredients for improving the appearance of fine lines, uneven texture, dullness, dark spots and congestion. The key is choosing the right strength, introducing it gradually and supporting the skin with hydration rather than rushing to the strongest formula.
What is retinal?
Retinal, also called retinaldehyde, belongs to the retinoid family of vitamin A ingredients. It sits between retinol and prescription retinoic acid in the vitamin A conversion pathway.
Before vitamin A can act in the skin, it must be converted into retinoic acid. Retinol requires two conversion steps, while retinal requires one. This is why retinal can offer strong visible results while still being available in cosmetic skincare.
How does retinal work?
Retinal supports the skin’s natural renewal processes. With consistent use, it can help improve the appearance of:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Uneven or rough texture
- Dullness and loss of radiance
- Dark spots and uneven-looking tone
- Congestion and visible pores
- Loss of firmness
Results develop gradually. A consistent, well-tolerated routine is more useful than using a high strength too quickly and repeatedly having to stop because of irritation.
Which Medik8 Crystal Retinal strength should you use?
The Medik8 Crystal Retinal ladder makes it possible to select a level that matches your experience and increase only when your skin has adapted.
Crystal Retinal 1 – 0.01%
Medik8 Crystal Retinal 1 is the gentlest facial strength. It is a sensible starting point for sensitive skin, very cautious beginners or people who have previously struggled to tolerate vitamin A.
Crystal Retinal 3 – 0.03%
Medik8 Crystal Retinal 3 is our usual introductory strength for most people who are new to retinal. It is designed to begin a progressive vitamin A routine while tolerance develops.
Crystal Retinal 6 – 0.06%
Medik8 Crystal Retinal 6 is suitable for established users whose skin is already comfortable with a lower retinal strength.
Crystal Retinal 10 – 0.1%
Medik8 Crystal Retinal 10 is an advanced option for experienced vitamin A users. It should not normally be selected as a first retinal product.
Crystal Retinal 20 and 24 – expert strengths
Crystal Retinal 20 – 0.2% and Crystal Retinal 24 – 0.24% are intended for highly experienced users who have progressed through lower strengths and maintained good tolerance.

How to introduce retinal into your routine
Use retinal in the evening. A gradual schedule gives the skin time to adjust:
- Weeks 1–2: use twice weekly.
- Weeks 3–4: use every other night if comfortable.
- After week 4: move towards nightly use only if the skin remains settled.
After cleansing, apply the amount directed on the product packaging to the face and neck, avoiding the eyelids and immediate eye area unless you are using an eye-specific formula. Allow it to absorb, then follow with moisturiser. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning.
We generally recommend finishing at least one tube at the current strength before considering the next step. There is no need to move up if your current level is producing results and remains comfortable.
How to hydrate while using retinal
Dryness and temporary sensitivity are more likely when vitamin A is introduced too frequently or combined with several other active products. Keep the rest of the routine simple and support the skin barrier with a gentle cleanser, hydrating serum and moisturiser.
Using the Dr Motox sheet mask
The Dr Motox Exosome Collagen Sheet Mask for Face & Neck provides intensive face-and-neck hydration for skin that feels dry or depleted.
When you are beginning retinal, use the mask on a separate hydration evening. This makes it easier to understand how your skin is responding and avoids overcomplicating the routine. Once your skin is established and comfortable, the mask can be used whenever additional hydration is needed, following its supplied directions.
What should you avoid combining with retinal at first?
While your skin adapts, avoid introducing retinal on the same evening as strong exfoliating acids, abrasive scrubs or other retinoids. If you use salicylic or glycolic acid, place it on a different evening and introduce only one new active at a time.
Retinal and professional skin treatments
Retinoids may need to be paused before and after procedures such as microneedling, chemical peels, IPL or laser treatment. The correct interval depends on the procedure, product strength and your skin. Follow the instructions given by your treating practitioner rather than using a universal stopping period.
If you are unsure which strength suits your skin, an OBSERV 520x skin analysis or initial consultation can help create a more appropriate plan.
Retinal safety advice
- Patch test before first use.
- Do not apply retinal to broken, sunburnt or actively irritated skin.
- Reduce frequency or pause if you develop persistent burning, marked redness, swelling or significant peeling.
- Use daily broad-spectrum sunscreen and avoid intentional tanning.
- Do not combine multiple retinoid products unless advised by an appropriate professional.
- Retinoid skincare is generally avoided during pregnancy. If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding, seek advice from an appropriate healthcare professional before use.
- If you use prescription skincare or are being treated for a skin condition, check compatibility with your prescriber.
Frequently asked questions
Is retinal stronger than retinol?
Retinal is one conversion step closer to retinoic acid than retinol. Strength and tolerability still depend on the complete formula, concentration and individual skin response.
Can a beginner start with Crystal Retinal 3?
Yes. Crystal Retinal 3 is our usual starting recommendation for most new retinal users. Crystal Retinal 1 may be more appropriate for very sensitive skin or anyone wanting the gentlest introduction.
Should retinal be used every night?
Not immediately. Begin twice weekly and increase gradually. Some people remain on alternate-night use long term because that frequency suits their skin.
Can a hydrating mask be used with retinal?
Yes, but beginners may find it simplest to use the mask on a separate evening. Hydration supports comfort, but it does not replace the need to reduce retinal frequency if irritation develops.
How quickly should you move up the ladder?
There is no fixed deadline. Use at least one tube at your current level, make sure the skin is comfortable and move up only when there is a clear reason to do so.
